CNC Turning of Custom Steel Gear Shaft Weldment for a Gear Box Manufacturer
A company that manufactures gear boxes approached Butler Gear Enterprises, LLC. for custom CNC turning of a gear shaft weldment. We began by cutting the raw material (4140H steel) to size, then used a CNC lathe to turn the pinion and shaft to the client's specifications. The pinion shaft weldment was then heat treated (annealed). Finally we Heliarc welded the rim, web and hub.
The finished assembly weighed 150 lbs and measured 22.5" in outside diameter, 18.5" in inside diameter, and 8.00" in height. Throughout manufacturing, we upheld tightest tolerances of .001". To guarantee the quality of the weldment, we used magnetic particle inspection to make sure all the fillet welds were 100% ready for use.
A .001 machining tolerance was maintained throughout manufacturing.
